About Chichester, West Sussex

Chichester is a cathedral city in west Sussex in south-east England and a county town. The town has a long history as a settlement from Roman times and is home to a 12th century cathedral and some of the oldest buildings in the UK.

Five Church of England churches are also situated in the town. The Butter Market in North Street was designed by John Nash and was opened in 1808 as a food and produce market. In 1900 a second storey was added to the building which originally housed an arts institute.

The Corn Exchange in East Street was built in 1833 and was designed to show off its importance to trade. In 1883 it was also used for drama and entertainment.  The Chichester Cross is familiar to old market towns and was built in 1501 as a covered market-place.

Chichester is situated on the River Lavant. The Chichester Conservation area is designated for its architectural and historic interest and encompasses the whole of the Roman town with Grade 1 and 2 listed buildings.

Chichester – one of the best places to live in England

Chichester was named as one of the best places to live in Britain last year by the Sunday Times, clinching third spot.

The locations are selected for offering the best quality of life to the widest number of people, and combining desirable features such as a positive community spirit, good local shops and services and attractive outdoor spaces.

Kingsham in Oxfordshire was crowned as the Best Place to Live in the South East, with Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, just edging Chichester into third.

Best Places to Live, home editor Helen Davies said: “Britain is full of great places to live, and our annual supplement celebrates the richness on offer from bustling market towns and buzzing city centres to sociable suburbs and sleepy hamlets.
